There are 3 different types of writing prompts on the APUSH National Exam. Here is a quick description:

1. Short Answer Questions:
-4 questions, 1 big paragraph length with details
-50 minutes
-20% of your exam score
-scored on a 3 point scale

Key to doing well: provide specific examples (vocab) to make your point, use historical thinking in analyzing any documents.

2. Document Based Question (DBQ)
-1 question, no choice, 5 or 6 paragraph essay
-prompt, 7 documents
-55 minutes
-25% of your exam score
-scored on a 7 point scale

Key to doing well: Strong Thesis, address proper historical thinking skill, use contextualization and synthesis





3. Long Essay Question
-1 question, choice from two, 4 or 5 paragraph essay
-35 minutes
-15% of your exam score
-scored on a 6 point scale
